Review: I'm actually surprised that I like this one as much as I do. Maybe it's the art? Maybe I just like the way that Nekota writes characters.

The whole book's about Yumeji and Shinkai's disfunctional relationship.

The main conflict stems from the fact that Yumeji's impotent and can only get it up with Shinkai (for some reason), but despite Shinkai's declarations of love, Shinkai treats Yumeji like some kind of immovable foot fungus. What gives?

What gives is this: I don't even know. The closest explanation given is, "this is just the way he loves" (or something along the lines of). It's possible that because Yumeji's such a terrible wimp, Shinkai feels the intense desire to bully him. More likely, Shinkai's the type of character that doesn't even realize that he's being caustic and cold. That's just...sort of his personality. I can understand that. Some people (cough cough) just have the innate ability to say critical things without realizing they could hurt the recipient, or even realizing how critical they are. (Or maybe Shinkai’s a bit tsundere.)

But make no mistake: Yumeji is the wimpiest character I've seen since for a while. He's downright pathetic. His pathetic-ness is annoying at times. It takes him a long time to realize that he's only with Shinkai because "he's terrified of him." Might I add that Shinkai is tiny and adorable? And aggressive, but in the kinky, sexual way that Yumeji actually appears to like. I even got pissed off a little when Yumeji seems to use Shinkai's slight threats as the primary reason that he dates him.

AND THROUGH ALL MY COMPLAINTS? I like it. The story's a little weird, but Nekota really does make her characters enjoyable to read about. Their interactions are enjoyable. Even the sex scenes contain dialog consisting of words one might actually want to read, rather than the usual, "ah, ah, put it iiiin." (Speaking of which, for a book with this much dick in it, there is surprisingly little penetrative sex.)

It's funny. THEY'RE funny. Sometimes it's even pretty cute. (Okay, more than sometimes. More than sometimes plus whenever Yumeji's smelling Shinkai.) It's a little uncomfortable sometimes too, but only in a way that serves the plot. So, yeah, I like it.

And, of course, it doesn't hurt that the art's pretty. (It's something she does with the toning. It just drives me all lustful.)

I almost forgot to add: There's a side story with Yumeji's friends too. Personally, I think the friends are more interesting as side-characters in the main story, but: Mu (isn't that a fabulous name?!) is a total slutbag. Like, "that's totally not realistic" slutbag. I mean seriously, I know that boys have an obscene amount of sex in manga, but he can’t abstain for ten days? Celibacy can't be THAT hard. (Then again, I don't know what it's like to be a guy.) The other guy (Muri, I think), is funny when he interacts with Shinkai, but with Mu, he just seems like an ass.
